Making a show ....

Hi there ..... it seems I have become a creature of habit ... usually every Thursday is show day, I get up, feed the cats, have a shower, a coffee, not necessarily at the same time and then start playing, I have my mixer/video setup down to flicking about ten switches and then play what's on my mind, I edit it that night then deliver it to Channel 31; a show every week? ... you have to work quick.

What's on my mind? ...

My students and the emails I receive usually give me a good clue as to what to talk about (or not talk about) ... when the show changed its format to a drum show from show 101 .... the first year of episodes were specific ... basic rock beats, rudiments, blues, rock, jazz, famous drummers and styles, .... the shows became more "concept" based, but it always changes ... in 2008... I've reintroduced guitar and bass with the introduction of building up loops and ostinatos.

Tell me a story ....

...... unlike shows 001 to 100 which had guests and editing, shows 101 to 176 were "live to camera" meaning that there were no edits, I simply played and talked until I stopped with the camera on a tripod .... hopefully around 26 minutes in length ... then I gave the s-vhs master to Channel 31 ... they were very patient with me! .... it seemed people liked it, so I kept going with it. I even won an award in 2000! Yowza :)

For a while there, I could only use two overhead mikes, then bought a piece of equipment that made my mixer compatible with the camera etc sending my show into the fantastic world of stereo hi-fi, unfortunately, at this stage (2001-2003) Channel 31 were still broadcasting in the wonderful world of left channel mono :( (notice the right side of my kit-floor toms side dipped a little in volume during this time. Now ... our beloved dinky community station is now in the world of stereo!! Yay ... (now all we have to do is fix the vision to sound synchronisation that goes out of whack at times; sometimes .... more technology ... more bugs ... oh by the way ... when are we going digital??)

When did I start editing again? ...

Around the middle of 2002 I bought a few things, a few knick knacks for my kit, a mini-dv camera and a little thing called an Apple eMac computer running imovies on os/x... I like it ... a lot ... it's not the biggest most expensive thing you can buy, but it is perfect for what I need ... so now the camera moves around again and crossdissolves fill the screen! .... yummo!

What do you do, why do you do it? ...

Past show 370 ... and I'm enjoying the process more than ever .... sometimes I talk away then demonstrate ... sometimes you don't see my head ... sometimes you don't see my head and I don't talk ... sometimes the camera moves, sometimes it doesn't .... every year I try to add a little something ... 2002 ... piccolo toms for melody ... 2003 Karl Karma Detective Stories and Short Films ... 2004 ... dodgy cam and noggin cam! ... four cameras to choose from now .... 2008 ... loop stations, guitar and bass.

I like the idea of an oasis in the middle of TV land, sometimes the start and end credits are shown in silence, creating a buffer between the ads and the show .... sometimes I like the idea of just soft drumming with no words .... my own tai-chi in some strange sort of way.

... and in closing? ...

I love making Melbourne Musos and as long as I'm still getting that spark, I'll keep going ... If you are still reading this far, I'm assuming you've seen the show, thank you for that, and thank you for coming to the website :)

all the best ... chris

A quick blurb .....

..... Having made 350+ episodes since the show's debut in 1995, Creator/Producer Chris Quinlan has given nine years of music tips, interviews and rare video footage of local, interstate and international musicians.

1999 saw Chris change the format to a dedicated drum tip show which has seen a loyal and dedicated following tuning into Melbourne Musos currently Fridays at 4.30pm and Saturday 11.00am on Channel 31.

The unique approach to Melbourne Musos serves to create an honesty that viewers have come to appreciate.

Drum styles are explained and demonstrated by Chris with tongue in cheek humour and an attention to detail. Filming the show from his studio, Chris Quinlan is also the creator of The Australian and New Zealand Cultural Arts Drumset Syllabus and Eight Drumset Manuals to date.

Chris has also been a regular contributor to MIXDOWN Monthly and DRUMMER magazines. Chris plays DW drums and Paiste Cymbals, hitting his Evans Skins with Vic Firth sticks ..... exclusively.

The artists that have appeared on Melbourne Muso's shows 1-100 are listed on my
Show Listing
. Some of my favorite shows included Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, Trilok Gurtu, The Ensemble Modern, members of Jethro Tull, Allan Zavod and Fairport Convention.
